Terms of Use
Version 2026-10-27 · in force from 27 October 2026
1. Who we are and what these Terms cover
1.1. SoSIMply (the "service") is a free web platform for designing and simulating radiation detectors and their readout electronics. It is an independent, non-commercial project run by Yavuz Selim Karakaş, a private individual ("we", "us"). Contact: privacy@sosimply.net.
1.2. These Terms apply when you use the service. You accept them when you create an account, by ticking the two boxes on the registration form. If you do not accept them, do not create an account; you may still read the public pages and use the Designer without an account.
1.3. How we handle personal data is explained in the Privacy Notice, which is not part of this contract.
1.4. Clauses approved specifically. Under article 1341, second paragraph, of the Italian Civil Code, sections 8, 9, 10, 12 and 13 of these Terms bind you only if you approve them specifically. You do so with the second box on the registration form, which reads: "I specifically approve sections 8, 9, 10, 12 and 13 of the Terms of Use (availability of the service, account suspension and closure, liability, changes to the Terms, law and courts)."
2. What the service is, and what it is not
2.1. SoSIMply runs Monte Carlo simulations with established scientific software (Geant4 and the other tools listed under Info → Built with) and models of detector electronics. Results are simulations: estimates produced by models, with the statistical and systematic limits that come with them. They are not measurements.
2.2. The platform's validation record (Info → Scientific validation) states what each model has been compared against and its known limitations. Read it before you rely on a result.
2.3. Research and education only. The service is provided for research, teaching and learning. It is not intended, designed or validated for safety-critical, regulatory, legal or commercial decisions.
3. Accounts
3.1. You need an account to run simulations, save setups and contribute components.
3.2. You must be at least 16 years old to create an account.
3.3. Give an e-mail address that you can receive mail at. You must verify it with the 6-digit code we send you before you can start runs; the code is valid for 24 hours, and you can ask for a new one.
3.4. Keep your password secret. You are responsible for what is done with your account. Tell us at once if you think it has been misused.
3.5. One person, one account, unless we agree otherwise (for example for a class). Accounts are personal: do not share your sign-in, and do not sell or transfer your account.
3.6. You can change your details in your account and ask us to delete it at any time (Privacy Notice §7).
3.7. Researcher tier. You may apply for the researcher tier, which carries higher limits and a larger monthly credit allocation (§7), with an institutional e-mail address and details of your work. A person decides each application. We may refuse an application, and we may withdraw the tier if the details given were not accurate.
4. Acceptable use
4.1. Use the service fairly and lawfully. In particular, do not:
- try to gain access to accounts, runs or data that are not yours, or probe, scan or test the service's security without our written permission;
- disrupt or overload the service, including by automated or bulk submissions beyond normal interactive use, by running several accounts to multiply your credits or limits, or by working around a limit, a queue or an approval step;
- upload malicious files, or content that is unlawful, infringes someone's rights, or contains personal data of other people (including patient data);
- use the service to design or evaluate anything intended to cause harm, or in breach of export-control or sanctions law that applies to you;
- present simulated results as measurements, or state or imply that SoSIMply, its authors, or the organizations whose software it uses endorse your work.
4.2. Limits apply, for example on events, run time and storage. They are shown in the service and may change to keep it available to everyone. A run whose estimated duration exceeds a threshold that depends on your tier waits for an administrator's approval before it starts.
5. Your content and contributions
5.1. Your setups, runs and results remain yours. You allow us to store and process them to provide the service to you, and to keep them in backups (Privacy Notice §5).
5.2. Share links. Anyone with a share link you create can view that setup until the link is withdrawn.
5.3. Community contributions. When you submit a component (for example a material or a photosensor) to the community library, you confirm that you may share its data, for example because it comes from a public datasheet, from your own measurement, or from a published source. You license the contribution to us and to everyone under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0). You keep your copyright and your right to be attributed: the service shows an approved contribution as a community contribution, with the datasheet link attached at approval, and you may ask us to name you, or to stop naming you.
5.4. We review contributions before they become public. We may label (for example "CUSTOM" or "community"), reject or remove them. Numbers you enter are shown with their stated source and status; we do not verify them unless we say so.
5.5. Results you publish. If you publish results obtained with SoSIMply, please cite the service (sosimply.net), the interface build and the run number shown on the run report, and the underlying scientific software as listed under Info → Built with.
6. Our content and third-party software
6.1. The service, its interface, texts, validation record and component library are protected by copyright and other rights held by us or by their authors. These Terms give you the right to use them through the service. They give no other licence. Contributions licensed under §5.3 remain available under CC BY 4.0.
6.2. The service uses third-party scientific software and data under their own licences, listed under Info → Built with. Nothing in these Terms limits your rights under those licences. "Geant4" and the names of the other tools are used only to say what the service is built with; their authors do not endorse SoSIMply.
7. Credits
7.1. What credits are. Credits allocate the shared computing capacity. One credit is one reference CPU-minute: the CPU time (user and system) that a run uses, multiplied by the speed factor of the computer it ran on, divided by 60. Credits never change a run's physics.
7.2. Free allocations. Each calendar month (UTC), the first time the server reads or changes your account's credits (for example when you open your balance or credit history, or start a run), the monthly allocation of your tier is added to your balance: 400 credits for a standard account and 2,000 credits for the researcher tier. Every account also receives 100 credits once. A month in which this never happens receives no allocation. Unused credits do not expire.
7.3. Before a run starts. The server estimates the run's cost. The run starts when the estimate is at most 10 % above your available balance; otherwise it is refused with its reason and is not queued. A run is never shortened to fit your balance. When the run starts, an amount up to five times the estimate, and never more than your available balance, is reserved.
7.4. When a run ends. The reservation is released and the run is charged:
- a completed run: the CPU time it used, at least 1 credit;
- a cancelled run: the CPU time it used until the cancellation;
- a run that ends in an error: charged and refunded in full in the same settlement, so it costs you nothing;
- a run whose engine never started: nothing.
No charge exceeds the run's reservation, and your balance never goes below zero.
7.5. Corrections. We may add credits to an account or reduce its balance (never below zero), for example to correct an error. Every change appears in your credit history with its reason.
7.6. No money value. Credits cannot be bought. They cannot be sold, transferred to another account or exchanged for money. The service has no paid features.
7.7. Changes to the allocations. A change to the monthly allocations takes effect on the first day of a calendar month (00:00 UTC) and never removes credits already added to your balance. A change that reduces the allocations is a material change under §12.
8. Availability, suspension and discontinuation of the service
The service is free and run on a best-effort basis by one person. We do not promise that it is available at any given time, that a run finishes, or that results, setups or accounts are kept for any period beyond what the Privacy Notice states. We may change, suspend or discontinue the service or any part of it. Where we can, we give notice and a way to download your results first.
9. Suspension and closure of accounts and runs
9.1. You may stop using the service at any time and ask us to delete your account.
9.2. We may suspend or close an account, or refuse, pause or cancel a run, if you break these Terms, if the account endangers the service or other users, or if the law requires it. Unless it would be unsafe or unlawful, we tell you why and give you the chance to respond. A person, not an automated system, takes the decision.
10. No warranty; limitation of liability
10.1. The service and all results are provided free of charge and "as is", without any warranty that they are accurate, complete, fit for a particular purpose or free of errors. You are responsible for checking whether a result is suitable for your use.
10.2. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from the use of the service or its results, or from its unavailability, including loss of data or of results.
10.3. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability for intent or gross negligence (article 1229 of the Italian Civil Code), or any other liability that the law does not allow to be excluded or limited, including your mandatory rights as a consumer where they apply.
11. Personal data
We process personal data as the Privacy Notice describes.
12. Changes to these Terms
12.1. We may change these Terms, for example when the service changes or the law requires it. We publish each new version on this page with its version date.
12.2. Before a material change takes effect, we tell account holders by e-mail at least 30 days in advance.
12.3. When a new version takes effect, the application asks you to confirm it at your next sign-in. Until you confirm, you can still sign in, browse and save your work, but you cannot start runs. If you do not agree, you may close your account before the change takes effect.
13. Governing law and courts
13.1. These Terms are governed by Italian law.
13.2. The competent court is the one the law designates. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory law of the country where you live, and you may bring proceedings before the courts of your own country.
13.3. Before going to court, please write to privacy@sosimply.net so that we can try to resolve the matter.
